A few historical facts about elafonissi: Elafonissi is not only famous for its exotic beauty but also for its historical importance. In 1824, during the Ottoman occupation of Crete, many local women and children sought refuge on the small island of Elafonissi.
The area became a tragic historical site after a massacre that took place during this difficult period of Cretan history.

Today , Elafonissi is a peaceful paradise and a protected Natura 2000 area ,known worldwide for its rare ecosystem,pink sand and crystal-clear shallow waters.
