Description
Koufonisi or Lefki as a second name, is situated 10 miles southeast from Makri Gialos.
Its name comes from the many pits and caves created by the sea and the rain by sculpting the soft rocks. The name Lefki, which in Greek means “white” comes from the white color of limestones and marl.
The island is not inhabited today, but it is full of findings that testify,
the human existence from the early Minoan to post-Byzantine times. Locals often call Koufonissi the “Delos of Crete” due to the important antiquities on the island
